Lanyu [Orchid Island] Storage Site

The Lanyu Storage Site is located at Longmen [Dragon Gate], located on the southeast part of Lanyu Island. The site faces the ocean in one direction with hills behind it in the other three directions. The site, therefore, has natural barriers. Moreover, there are no residents within a range of five kilometers. Current capacity of the Lanyu Storage Site is 98,112 barrels. From Min Kuo 71 [1982] when the site first became operational to Min Kuo 84 [1995], more than approximately ninety-seven thousand barrels of waste from nuclear power generation and from the medical, agricultural, industrial, education, and research sectors throughout the country were sent to the Lanyu Storage Site.
