The city of Tsuruga, a port town which thrived long ago as Japan's main gateway, is surrounded by the scenic coastal panorama of Wakasa Bay in Fukui Prefecture.

Japan Atomic Power began commercial operations here in 1970 when Unit Number One went into service. The second unit came on line in 1987.  Electricity produced at the facility is supplied for industrial, commercial and residential use through regional utilities such as Kansai, Chubu and Hokuriku Electric Power Companies, thus helping to supply electric power in Japan.

The first unit of the Tsuruga Power Station went under construction in April 1966 as the Japan's prototype LWR nuclear power station for commercial use.  Completed in a record time of 48 months, the plant entered commercial service in March 1970. Later, efforts focused on environmental protection, one such being the installation of a new waste treatment system.
