Transparency Examples in the United States

The map below shows the distribution of nuclear power plants in the United States, with six demonstrations of nuclear transparency.

1. Waste Isolation Pilot Plant: Real time transparency at the world's first (and only) geologic repository for nuclear waste.

Click either for direct routing to real time data or to a screen capture site with explanations.
2.  Waste Isolation Pilot Plant:  Virtual Tour of the nuclear waste repository.
Background information on WIPP
3.  Yucca Mountain Repository:
Video Tour of thermal test tunnel shows the viewer how engineers test for the thermal response of tunnel rock to the simulated heat of spent fuel in the geologic repository
Background information on Yucca Mountain explains its future role for geologic disposition of spent nuclear fuel.
4.  NEWNET: Environmental Radiation system in New Mexico and Alaska.
NEWNET displays gamma ray measurements from New Mexico and other states to show that Dept. of Energy facilities are operating safely.
5.  CEMP: Environmental Radiation system in Nevada and Utah
CEMP displays gamma ray measurements from communities around the Nevada Test Site to show that no radiation arises from previous NTS activities
6.  Nuclear Regulatory Commission: The NRC regulates nuclear industry and shares safety and operating information
Typical of the Plant Information data is that offered for McGuire Unit 1.

7.  . Savannah River Site: A test of video technology for transparency
